What Is The Best Way To Clean Wood Furniture?

10/31/2017

Cleaning

To properly clean your solid wood furniture use a soft cloth with warm water and mild dish soap. The water won’t harm the wood, just be careful not to saturate it. Wipe off the excess moisture with a paper towel as needed.

Waxing

Once the furniture is clean, use a quality soft wax polish or paste. Apply a thin coat or as directed and wait a few minutes before buffing. After one hour or so repeat the buffing process to remove any residual or excess wax. The result will be a rejuvenated long lasting finish.

Protecting

Ideally, keep your furniture out of direct sun light. It can cause excessive temperatures, with the potential for issues such as fading, excessive oxidization and accelerated drying of the wood. Also, avoid placing the furniture near heaters or heating vents. Dry heat can also lead to potential wood drying issues. The use of a humidifier to maintain a consistent level of relative humidity (between 40 to 50 percent) is the most ideal environment for solid wood furniture.

Your furniture is valuable and needs proper cleaning and maintenance. More extensive work should be left to a professional. Beaver Hardwood is a custom furniture maker and full maintenance and restoration service provider. Contact us at info@BeaverHardwood.com to discover the difference Beaver makes!

How To Choose The Right Custom Furniture Builder

10/30/2017

Not all custom furniture builders are alike. Furniture, like everything else, is only as good as the materials its made from and the skill and techniques of the maker themselves. If you want to invest in a one-of-a-kind heirloom quality piece you need to know what to look for.

Custom Made Furniture Should Always be One-Of-A-Kind

In today’s market place there are numerous custom makers out there building with all kinds of materials and using a wide variety of methods. If you find a maker whose offer seems too good to be true, it most likely is... Materials of the highest quality are never compromised by experienced markers who diligently follow proven methods and techniques, and offer only the highest caliber products with repeatable quality results in their work.

Why Custom Built?

There is a misconception that quality custom made furniture cost more, however this is simply not a reality. A custom built heirloom quality piece of furniture, made properly with high-quality materials, can be timeless, passed down through generations and without the need to ever be replaced. In fact high-quality heirloom quality furniture has been proven to increase in value over time and may even be considered an investment.

Selecting a Quality Custom Built Furniture Piece

To ensure you are purchasing quality custom made furniture, you need to examine it closely. Here are some things to look for:

  • Work Process – Inquire about the makers work process to understand how they create custom pieces. Talk to their clients, understanding their approach and make sure it aligns to your needs and expectations. After all, you are ordering a custom piece, so you want to ensure it is customized for you and what you require.

  • Lead Time – Custom made will take longer than an item that is mass-produced, but you still need to inquire about how long it will take. If you have a specific deadline, let the builder know and see if your schedule can be accommodated. At the same time, you do not want to rush the process and or compromise the result (a professional company will always set a realistic time frame and maintain quality above all else).

  • Materials – Most importantly, you want to know what type of materials they use and where they acquire their materials. Artisan style furniture should be made using exceptional, all natural, solid wood without compromise.

How To Perfectly Size Your Dining Table

8/17/2017

The dining room is the place everyone comes together to share meals and create memories. Taking the time to fully consider all your needs before you invest in a dining table is a wise decision. These days most dining rooms are rectangular in shape so we'll focus on how to calculate the right size rectangular dining room table.

Plan for your typical attendee size with the occasional annual or semi-annual increased head count. Allow for each person to be comfortably seated at the table with a minimum of 24" (28" ideally) in space. Also, be sure to account for additional room at each end of the table for those seated at the head (12" is ideal). Once you've calculated your idea table size you must also account for space around the table with a minimum of 30" before any obstruction (furniture or wall) on all four sides.

See our table below for a general guideline:

RECTANGULAR TABLE LENGTH
72 inches
84 inches
90 inches
96 inches
108 inches
120 inches

COMFORTABLE SEATING
6 people with 24" each
6 people with 30" each
8* people with 24" each
8 people with 24" each
8 people with 28" each
10 people with 24" each

MINIMUM ROOM LENGTH
11 feet
12 feet
12 1/2 feet
13 feet
14 feet
15 feet

*allows for 9" at each end of the table
